Elder Willie E. "Duke" Nesbitt, 69, of Sandusky, formerly of Chillicothe, gave up the ghost and went home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 17, 2011, in Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky, OH. He was born November 2, 1941, in Seneca, SC, to the late Jesse and Jossie Wright Nesbitt. On January 4, 1963, he married the former Erma J. Sherman, who preceded him in death on September 21, 2008. Surviving are his children: Michelle Alexander, Sandusky, OH; S. Rene (Anthony) King, Huron, OH; Wendy (Grady) Maxey-Douglass, Norcross, GA; Torrance (Chasity) Nesbitt, Chillicothe; 16 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins, including a special cousin Essie Brown, Sandusky, OH. He is also survived by his special coach, Coach Dono Moore and a brotherhood of football teammates from the US Coast Guard Bears "Cape May Boys." He was also preceded in death by his sister Florence Knight. Willie was a member of the Original Glorious Church of God In Christ where he served as an Elder. He loved to fish, sing, watch and play football and loved to barbeque. However, he could almost always be found reading his favorite book, the Bible. He served his country in the US Coast Guard, where he played football and was recruited by and tried out for the NY Jets. Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Friday, June 24, at the Original Glorious Church of God in Christ, with Bishop Melvin Maughmer officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 11am – 1pm at the church.
