William D. Morrissey Sr., 78, a thirty plus year resident of the city of Chillicothe died 2:50 am, Wednesday, August 24, 2011, at the Ohio State University Medical Center, following a prolonged illness. He was born June 21, 1933 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Gerald and Nellda Miles Morrissey. Survivors include his three sons, Peter, William Jr., Patrick; a daughter, Holly (Steve) Johnson; five grandchildren, Tyler, Megan, Katie, Jared, and Jessica; one great-grandchild, Justin; his former spouse and friend, Martha J. Morrissey; two brothers, James and Jerry Morrissey; and a sister, Nellda Riefsnyder. Bill worked for over 28 years for the F. W. Woolworth Co., who moved Bill and his family to the Chillicothe area in 1967 to manage the Woolworth store in the Chillicothe Mall. Since that time, he has been a longstanding figure in Chillicothe politics. He started his political career as a Councilman at Large and continued his career as Chillicothe Transit Director and City Auditor. He served as auditor for over 25 years and was a major influence in the Ross Co. Republican Party. Bill was very involved in the Chillicothe community. He was a long time member of Kiwanis; treasurer of the Ross Co. Golf Association; served on the board of The United Way; and was one of the founding members and first president of the Chillicothe High School Touchdown Club. Most recently he was appointed as the President of the Board of the Ross Co. Humane Society. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 am Monday at St. Peter Catholic Church, Rev. William Hahn, Celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Margaret Cemetery. Friends may call 1-3 and 5-8 Sunday at the Haller Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ross Co.
