William E. "Bill" Metzger, 95, of Chillicothe, died at 1:23am February 28, 2024, at Adena Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
He was born January 6, 1929, in Ross Co., to the late Earl and Marlene (Cook) Metzger. On July 28, 1949, he married the former Janice E. Schooley, who survives.
Also surviving are their children: Vicki (Michael) Chester, of Chillicothe, Todd (Marsha Jane) Metzger, of Clarksburg; 7 grandchildren: Scott Metzger, David (Crystal) Cochenour, Lindsay (Jake) Bickenheuser, Justin (Candice) Metzger, Ashley (Loren) Smith, Brandon (Christie) Chester, Colin (Chelsey) Chester; 15 great-grandchildren: Dalton, Langston, Britton, Cannon, Lauren, Abbie, Aubrey, Eve, Lane, Rory, Finnley, Arrington, Beckham, Bryant, and Teagan; 4 nephews and a niece. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Cooke Metzger.
Bill was a graduate of Williamsport High School. He was born and raised on the family farm, which he took over as the 4 th generation farmer , along with his father Earl and his brother Cooke. The farm continues, now in its 6 th generation. Bill was a former member of Springbank UMC and current member of Trinity UMC. Farming was his life, from being a 4-H member and advisor, to serving on the Farm Bureau Council and working at the Ross Co. Fair in support of his church and 4-H. Bill enjoyed staying active. Even at the age of 95, he was able to attend his great-grandchildren's activities. He also enjoyed working on his farm implement models in his workshop.
At his request, private graveside services will be held in Springbank Cemetery under the direction of Haller Funeral Home & Crematory. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either: Ross County 4-H Endowment c/o OSU Extension Ross County, 475 Western Ave., Suite F, Chillicothe, OH 45601; or Trinity UMC, 24 S. Mulberry St., Chillicothe, OH 45601.
