Virginia L. (Schuer) Sampson, 78, passed away from this life surrounded by her family on Wednesday, October 4, 2023 following a brief illness. She was born on June 20, 1945 in Chillicothe, Ohio to Clement F. and Bess L. (Cook) Schuer. On August 17, 1968 she married the love of her life, Dr. David N. Sampson, who preceded her in death on February 10, 2013.
Gini was a 1963 graduate of Chillicothe High School and a 1967 graduate of Otterbein College where she majored in music education. While at Otterbein she was a member of Kappa Phi Omega sorority and was on the homecoming court. Gini began her teaching career which has spanned more than 50 years in Fredricktown, Ohio. When she and Dave moved to Cleveland for his continued education in medical school, she continued as a music educator and eventually started a nearly 45 year stint as the music teacher at Bishop Flaget School, where she was still currently teaching. Gini was talented beyond measure with her musical abilities and spent many years taking on the role of accompanist for various groups and musical shows including the Renaissance Singers, the Junior Civic League Follies, and high school music competitions. She began her career as the organist of First Christian Church when she was just sixteen years old. Gini was also a member of Lunch Bunch, Hobby Club, and Area Artist Series. She was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church and served as the financial secretary and a Sunday School teacher for many years.
Gini was preceded in death by her parents, Clement and Bess Schuer, her husband, Dr. David Sampson, her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Norman and Betty Sampson, a sister-in-law, Dr. Ruth Sampson, a brother-in-law, Dennis Sampson, and her infant grandchildren who have been her special angels. She is survived by two daughters, Amy (James) Aspenwall of Cincinnati, and Heather (Jeremy) Bryant of Chillicothe, grandchildren Grant and Austin Aspenwall and Carter, Cohen, Landis, and Lydia Bryant. Gini also leaves behind a host of special cousins and friends. She was compassionate, talented, and her family was her world. She was a loving mother and a doting grandmother who treasured her time with her grandchildren. She brought so much joy into the world with her musical talents and her loving heart.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, October 8, 2023 at 2:00pm at First Christian Church, 264 W. Water Street. Burial will follow in Grandview Cemetery. Calling hours will be observed from 4:00-7:00pm on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at Haller Funeral Home, Chillicothe. Memorial contributions in Gini's honor can be made to First Christian Church, 264 W.
