Virginia Joan Oyer, 93, of Chillicothe, Ohio, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2026. She was a cherished mother, wife, grandmother, and dear friend to so many, and her presence will be deeply missed.
Joan was born on April 20, 1932, in Kenova, West Virginia, to Stephen and Gypsie Lett, joining her brother Albert. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Oyer. She is survived by three loving daughters: Terry Roe (Michael) of Chillicothe; Lorie McCollough (Kevin) of Montpelier, VA; Beth Hill (Rick) of Frankfort, OH; and her bonus daughter of more than thirty years, Nancy Brown (Richard) of Chillicothe. Joan (“Gran”) was blessed with nine grandchildren: Josh Melott (Alisha); Lindsey Bentley (Travis); Ryan Hill (Lisa); Sara Hess (Jonathan); Hannah Roe-Meschke (Scott); Evan McCollough (Peyton); Cameron McCollough (Kaeler), Mark (Jody) Porter, and Matthew (Trisha) Porter; as well as thirteen great-grandchildren.
Joan was employed by WearEver Aluminum, Inc., retiring in 1990 after many years of service.
There is no way to properly recognize or list the innumerable friendships Joan enjoyed. The love, true friendship, and care afforded by so many others greatly enriched Joan’s life in meaningful ways over the years, and her family will be forever grateful for their presence in Joan’s life.
Joan’s faith was steadfast and exemplary. She was a constant presence at Chillicothe’s Tabernacle Baptist Church where she was a member of more than sixty-five years. She looked forward to worshipping with her many church friends and experiencing opportunities to learn and grow in her relationship with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was particularly blessed in the strong bonds of Christian fellowship with the ladies in her Heart-to-Heart Sunday School class whom she held especially dear. The family extends its sincerest thanks to these women for their overwhelming and unfailing demonstrations of God’s love through their support and care for Joan.
Joan loved her daughters fiercely. She labored and sacrificed to ensure they had what they needed, strived to provide them with a good home, and helped equip each with the morals, values, and character necessary for their success as adults. In short, she was a strong, loving mother, a high calling she answered admirably, and her girls deeply loved and admired her.
Among her many talents, Joan was a gifted seamstress and creative quilter. It was her passion, being happiest with a lapful of fabric and patterns, gently driving a whirring sewing machine to do her bidding. She was well known for her beautiful quilts, which were frequently awarded blue ribbons for their exceptional quality and style. She experienced as much joy in gifting them as she did in their creation, and these will forever be treasured family keepsakes.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude for the care and attention she received from the staffs at Liberty Village and Traditions.
