We are sad to announce the passing of Tom Shoemaker, 85 years old of Chillicothe. Tom passed after an extended battle with Dementia at Traditions National Church Residence.
Tom was born in Bourneville, OH January 1, 1938 to Mary Esther and Leroy Shoemaker. Tom was a member of the Twin High School class of 1955. Tom was a proud Ohio University graduate class of 1959. Tom's illustrious education career began at Kingston High School. He was teaching Physical Education, Science, and Math. Tom also coached basketball and met his wife Dee who was also a young teacher at Kingston. Tom and Dee married in 1961 at the Kingston Presbyterian Church. Tom spent most of his career in the Madison Plains school district. He was a coach, teacher, principal, athletic director and superintendent. Tom retired with his wife Dee and returned to Chillicothe. They opened the Greenhouse Bed and Breakfast where they welcomed and entertained guests for almost 30 years. Tom came out of retirement to act as the Superintendent of Greenfield Local Schools. He completed his education career at Southeastern Local Schools as the Superintendent. Among his proudest accomplishments were the building of a new Madison Plains High School and the passage of the levy that resulted in the new Southeastern Local High School.
Tom had many interests. He was a pilot, avid outdoorsman, and collector. Tom was the President of the Spruce Hill Fish and Game Club, which he established with the help and support of family and close friends. He loved to search for antiques and collectibles. His collection included coins, Native American artifacts, graniteware, and toy airplanes, just to name few. Tom was a man of faith. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and served on the Church Board.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Leroy Shoemaker, and Brother, Jay Shoemaker (Peggy). He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Drusilla Dee Shoemaker Daughters: Dee Anna Chickerella (Mark) and Mary Power, granddaughters: Macey Power, Halley, and Hanna Chickerella, siblings: Max Shoemaker (Judy), Rex Shoemaker (Barb), Kay Binns, Brother-In-Law and Sister-In-Law, Jim and Sandy Donovan, and many cousins, nieces, nephews and good friends.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Friday at the Haller Funeral Home & Crematory, 1661 Western Avenue, Chillicothe, OH. Friends may call Thursday, November 16, 5-8 p.m. or Friday, November 17, 10-11a.m. at Haller's. A gathering of Christian Fellowship to celebrate the life of Tommy L. Shoemaker will be held at the Chillicothe Country Club following the service.
