On February 1
st
, 2024, just 25 days shy of his 69
th
birthday and 47
th
wedding anniversary, Thomas L Porter passed peacefully in his home surrounded by his family.
Thomas grew up in a large family that loved sports, which provided him the ability to play basketball, baseball, run track, and swim. His love for sports continued through his life as he played baseball in the Del Rice league for several years before transitioning over to coaching, where he continued to coach for many years. As coaching ended, his love for sports continued through cheering on his favorite sports teams and players like many armchair quarterbacks. If we're being honest, it really didn't matter what sport or team was playing, he'd watch anything and enjoy it.
Outside of sports, Thomas loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and camping. Ponds, lakes, streams, or rivers, if he had a line in the water, he was happy. It was the same way when he went hunting, even if he didn't see a single animal, he was just as happy to be out in the woods. He knew the value and peacefulness of being outdoors was time well spent. That's why family vacations were often spent camping at Greenbo Lake, and let's not forget the annual spring camping trip to Tycoon Lake with his sons.
Throughout the years Thomas worked as a Lifeguard, Sporting Goods store employee, and Pepsi delivery driver before finding a home with Chillicothe Correctional Institution (CCI). He was dedicated to his job and drove over an hour one-way. When bad weather hit and others called off, he was still there – and trust me, his coworkers made sure he heard about it "Porter, what are you doing? Are you trying to make the rest of us look bad?". Jokes aside, his dedication is what allowed him to cultivate many professional and personal relationships that continued even after his diagnoses. Many of those same people and relationships are what helped him get through the hard times of battling cancer. He and his family are forever grateful to his coworkers, friends, and family.
Thomas is survived by his wife Donna J Mauk; two sons Thomas (Megan) Porter II and Ryan (Dayna) Porter of Chillicothe; two granddaughters LeeAnn Porter and Parker Porter; four siblings Joe (Barbara) Porter of South Carolina, Danny (Beverly) Porter of Lancaster, David (Cheryl) Porter of Sciotoville, and Kelly Campbell of South Carolina; two sisters-in-law Doris (Danny) Simon of Portsmouth and Devona Collier of Wheelersburg; and countless number of nieces, nephews, and beloved friends.
Thomas is preceded in death by his parents Gerald and Norma Porter, brother Tommy Lee Porter, sister Mary Porter Book, and foster son Colby Lynch.
Per Thomas' wishes, there will not be a funeral service; however, the family will receive visitors at their home in Chillicothe for a celebration of life on February 24

from 2pm until 6pm. For those who wish to send their respects and condolences, you may deliver them to the Haller Funeral Home (1661 Western Ave, Chillicothe, OH 45601) between February 12
