Thomas Dallas Downs, beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at his residence in Llano, Texas. Born on October 15, 1932, in Lancaster, Ohio, Tom led a life marked by service, dedication, and generosity that touched the lives of many.
Tom was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Ann "Ginny" Downs, who passed in 2003. After her passing, Tom relocated to Llano, Texas, where he established a new chapter of his life. He remarried and continued to live in Llano, where he became an active member of the First Baptist Church for 16 years. Tom was admired for his artistic talent in creating stained glass and was especially known for crafting beautiful lamps and crosses. Two of his large stained glass crosses can be admired in the sanctuary of his church today—a testament to his skill and spirit of giving.
His career in Chillicothe saw him working security at the Mead Paper Mill for over 40 years. Tom also served his country in the U.S. Army starting on November 20, 1952, embodying the spirit of patriotism throughout his life. Tom's involvement with the Masons from an early age allowed him to give to those in need wherever he was.
Tom is survived by his loving children: Karen Fisher, Patricia Lynn (James) Conaway, Mark (Starla) Downs; his Grandchildren: Thomas D. (Deborah) Downs III; Christopher Allen (Tiffany M.) Downs; Arthur C. (Mari) Fisher; Jason C. Fisher; Jamie (Isaac) Rechsteiner; Paulina (Matt) Boggs; Matthew A. (friend Treasa) Downs; Casie R. Downs; and Olivia M. (Nick) Comer. His legacy continues with 27 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Millard W. Downs and Elizabeth L. (Moody) Downs, his son Thomas D. Downs Jr., son-in-law Arthur Fisher, granddaughter Jessica Downs, and his siblings: James F. Downs, Wesley B. Downs, Margaret (Downs) Boystel, Mary Austin, Opal Fauble, Violet Graves, Florence McDaniel, Eva Adrian, Carolyn Whalen, Nancy Riley, and Jane Miller.
Tom Downs will be remembered for his devoted service, love for family, artistic contributions, and steadfast faith. He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Tom's life will be celebrated with a visitation at Haller Funeral Home & Crematory in Chillicothe, Ohio on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A funeral service will follow on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at 12:00 pm at the Haller Funeral Home followed by burial and Military Honors at Grandview Cemetery.
