Shirley Hitchens

November 15, 1937 — January 7, 2014

Shirley M. (Adams) Hitchens passed unexpectedly but safely into the arms of her Lord & Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, January 7, 2014, at Adena Regional Medical Center. Born in Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio on November 15, 1937, Shirley was the daughter of the late Ira Adams and Esta Mae Cooper Adams. Matriculated thru the Catholic School System and the Chillicothe Business College, and retired after 32 years of service from the Ross County Emergency Management Agency, Shirley was a life-long learner who continually and earnestly studied the bible and explored the world through the pages of books. She loved music, art, and scrapbooking and her greatest joys in life were her grandchildren. She was survived by her children and their spouses: Gregg Adams, Rev. Robert and Monica Hitchens, Tamra and Wendell Lowe; grandchildren, Cameron and Donavan Lowe, Lauren and Trey Hitchens, Gregg II and Olivia Adams; a very special sister-in-law Marcella Hitchens and special bonus daughter Myia Hambrick. She was also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends and was preceded in death by her parents, brother Gene Edward Adams and sister-in-law Bertha Adams. In celebration of Shirley's life, the family will receive visitors Saturday, January 11, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 65 W. Fourth Street, Chillicothe, where funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Robert Hitchens, Jr. and Rev. Jonathan McReynolds officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery. Shirley loved flowers but believed they were intended for the living. She would have most appreciated memorial contributions made in her name to the Library Fund of Ross County, 140 S. Paint St., P.O. Box 140 S. Paint, Chillicothe, Ohio 45601 or to First Baptist Church Building Fund. Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. John 11:25 NKJ
