Sandra Ater

February 7, 1947 — September 27, 2023

Sandra K. Ater, 76, passed away at home and surrounded by her loving family on September 27, 2023, after a brief illness.

She was born February 7, 1947, to the late Jack W. and Carol (Trego) Ater in the Tootle family home in Ross County where her mother and grandmother were also born. She married  her best friend and only love, Bernard J. (Butch) Ater, Jr., on December 27, 1970. He gave her three wonderful children, Alyssa Ater, Michael Ater, and Brianne (Matthew) Paxton. She loved them so much and was very proud of them.  She is also survived by her beautiful granddaughters, Kaitlyn (Byrd Green) Connery and Lauryn Connery and their father, Tyson Connery.  Those girls were the light of her life and were loved more than they could ever imagine.  She is also survived by much loved sisters Krista Doyle and Jacquelyn (Dan) Mace, nephew Shawn (Kasarah) Doyle and their children, nieces Kelley (Kevin) Winegardner and their children, Heather (Brian) Sowers and their children, Ashley Mace and her son, and Kelsey Mace.  Her family was the most important thing in her life. She is also survived by the best cousins anyone could have. She was pre-deceased by her parents and brother-in-law Dick Doyle.

Sandra - or Soni, as she was called - graduated from the last class at Clarksburg High School in 1965.  She attended OUC and was employed by ODOT until the birth of her daughter, Alyssa.  After raising her 3 children, she returned to work as a secretary in the Unioto High School Counseling Office. She retired in 2021 after 25 years in a job she loved, working with a terrific staff and many wonderful students.  When not working, Soni was an avid reader and enjoyed making cross-stitch samplers for the special occasions in the lives of her loved ones. She also spent many years as a 4-H advisor.

There will be no viewing.  A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.  Instead of flowers, the family would like to honor Soni, the final Valedictorian of Clarksburg High School, by way of donations to the Clarksburg High School Alumni Association Scholarship Fund.  Checks may be sent to and payable to: The Clarksburg High School Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, c/o Candace Caplinger, President, 66 Applewood Drive, Chillicothe, OH 45601.
