Ruth was also a homemaker for many years, and a former Sunday School teacher at Franklin Avenue United Methodist Church.

Ruth had a flair for decorating, a robust sense of humor, and an independent cast of mind. A lover of song, she knew the lyrics to countless Pop and Jazz standards, including her favorite, "Stardust". Ruth cherished her flower garden and took copious notes on her voluminous gardening books, treasuring the warm weather when she could spend hours tending to her flowers, feeding the birds, and contemplating nature. A lover of literature, Ruth read every day. Among her favorites were To Kill A Mockingbird and The Grapes of Wrath . Competitive in word games, she enjoyed handily beating her son and eldest daughter in Words With Friends. Among the quotes she shared on social media was this one from Cicero: "If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need."

Private graveside services will be held in Rushtown Cemetery, Rushtown, OH at the convenience of the family. Calling hours will not be observed. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, or the donor's favorite non-profit entity in her honor.
