Rev. Roy James Smith, 94, of Chillicothe, went to be with the Lord at 6:05am Tuesday, May 3, 2011, at his residence following an extended illness. He was born April 24, 1917, in Portsmouth, OH, to the late Elbert and Rachel Estep Smith. On November 23, 1936, he married the former Ida Elizabeth Sutton, who preceded him in death in 1956. He was also preceded in death by two daughters from his first marriage, Sylvia Jean Smith and Emily Elizabeth Smith. His son James E. (Vickie) Smith, of Chillicothe, survives. On July 6, 1956, he married the former Martha May Markel, who survives. Jim and Martha had two sons, surviving, Michael T. (Mae) Smith, Brookville, IN; and Mark W. Smith, Chillicothe; 7 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and a special cousin Ed Smith, Chillicothe. In addition to his first wife and daughters, he was predeceased by his grandson, James W. Smith; a brother Kenneth Smith; a sister Olga May Stulley; a half-brother Elbert Smith, Jr.; and a half-sister Ethel. Jim had preached since the mid-1940's and was ordained a minister in 1967. While he continued spreading the good word throughout his whole life, he officially retired from the ministry in 1990. He was a pastor of several churches throughout southern Ohio, including Vinton and Pike counties. He had also worked at the former Mead Paper Co. before retired in 1980. Jim was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a member of Orient Lodge 321, F & AM. He was an avid sportsman and loved to fish. Funeral services will be held at 10:00am Saturday, May 7, 2011, at First United Methodist Church, 585 E. Main, with Rev. Bill Mason officiating assisted by Jeffrey Miller. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 5-8pm at Haller Funeral Home, where a Masonic Funeral will be held at 7pm.
