Roscoe Edward Swartz, born October 24, 1930 in Georgetown, OH to Roscoe Edward Sr. and Cinderella Richards Swartz, died May 4, 2010. Roscoe loved people and loved God with his whole life. He sought to be a faithful, kind man and was to his last breath. He married his college sweetheart, Elizabeth Eaton Swartz of Grand Rapids, MI on August 21, 1954, who survives. Also surviving are their four children, Julia and Tim Pfister, of Ben Lomand, CA, Diane and Dan Detrich, of Mansfield, OH, Charlie and Debbie Swartz, of Seattle, WA, and John Roscoe and Christa Leonard Swartz, of Ridgewood, NJ. Their 11 grandchildren are Hannah and Madeline Pfister, Jennifer, Jonathan, Eleanor, Elliott and Matt Detrich, Henry Swartz, and Roscoe, Ava and Jack Swartz. He is also survived by his sister, Sara Swartz Paggi, of Charleston, SC. He was preceded in death by his parents. Dr. Roscoe Swartz was a graduate of the College of Wooster, 1952 and Western Reserve University Dental School, 1956. He served two years as a Captain in the Dental Corps of the United States Air Force at Tachikawa Air Base, Japan. He returned from Japan to serve a two year internship in Oral Surgery and Anesthesiology at Cincinnati General Hospital. He came to Chillicothe to establish a practice in Oral Surgery in 1961 and was the first oral surgeon in the area. He loved healing and helping people and continued in the work he loved for 48 years. Dr. Swartz served on the board of the Scioto Society since its inception to bring "Tecumseh" to Ross County. He was a member of the Rehwinkel Dental Society, Sunset Club, and a board member of the Ross Co. Historical Society, a former member of the Chillicothe Noon Rotary Club and the Renaissance Singers. Roscoe was a faithful Christian. He was a member and elder of First Presbyterian Church for many years. His son Charlie was ordained into the Presbyterian ministry at that church. After Roscoe and his wife moved to their farm near Bainbridge they became members of the Bainbridge United Methodist Church. Horses were always a part of his life. He raised them, trained them, and loved to ride the fields and woodlands of Ross County. A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm Sunday, May 9 at the Bainbridge United Methodist Church. Friends may call 2-6 pm Saturday, May 8 at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Bainbridge United Methodist Church, 201 E. Second St., Bainbridge, OH, 45612.
