Robert Edward Paul Vogelgesang, 81, of Chillicothe, affectionately known to many as "Grampy," died at 9:43am Sunday, July 2, 2006, in Heartland Nursing Home. He was born March 1, 1925, in Richmond, IN, to the late Edward Paul and Mary Sharitz Vogelgesang. On April 10, 1953, he married the former Betty Ann Cross Haller, who preceded him in death on May 19, 1985. On September 30, 1988, he married the former Rena Wilt Miller, who preceded him in death on May 3, 2001. Surviving are his step-sons and their families: H. Timothy Haller, Grove City, OH and his friend Barbara Hilditch; and Benney and Margaret Haller, Chillicothe; grandchildren: Dawn (Mark) Goodfleisch, Kristin (Scott) Cosgrove, Aaron (Theresa) Haller, Michael (Carol) Haller, Dr. Patricia Haller (Brad Smith), Nettina Haller, Matthew (Jill) Haller; great-grandchildren Zachary (Kimi) Huston, Aimee Huston; Tyler and Travis Goodfleisch, Joshua Spencer, Brittney Cosgrove, Reid Haller; Andrea, Benjamin, Nicholas, and Daniel Haller; and Meryl Haller; and his extended family at Heartland Nursing Home. In addition to his wives, he was predeceased by his dear Uncle Howard Vogelgesang, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Fred and Margaret Skatzes. Grampy worked for Columbus Home Improvement, Parson's Linoleum, and Stedman Floors where he was known as both the "Whistler" and the best tile man in and around Franklin Co. He then moved to Chillicothe where he retired from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center as a Foreman in the Housekeeping Department. He was a WWII Navy Veteran, Gunners Mate Second Class, and was in the first wave to storm Normandy Beach. He enjoyed fishing, hunting mushrooms, auto racing, gardening, and in his later years he really enjoyed "windshield time". He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, and a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:30am, Saturday, July 8, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Rev. Lawrence Hummer Celebrant. Military committal services and entombment will follow at 11:45am in Our Mother of Sorrows Chapel located on the grounds of St. Joseph Cemetery, 6440 S. High St., Lockbourne, OH. Friends may call Friday from 1-3pm and 6-8pm, at Haller Funeral Home, where a wake service will be held at 8:00pm.
