Robert "Bob" Earl Fleming made his appearance into this world on October 10, 1943, born at home to his parents Glen "2-Pap" and Octavia Kidd Fleming. One of 20 siblings, Bob learned the ways of survival in rural Appalachian life. However, by most accounts, he never quite mastered cooking, despite the best efforts of his beloved grandmother, Laura Salisbury Halbert. In 1960, he left Pike County, Kentucky, to enter US Navy training at Memphis Naval Air Station, Tennessee, where he really did spend time with Elvis Presley (and has the pictures to prove it). Upon completing training at Memphis, Bob became a Naval Aviator on the EC-121 reconnaissance aircraft in the Pacific Theatre, calling both Hawaii and Guam home. On return to civilian life in Columbus, Ohio, in 1965, Bob gave his family a great gift by marrying Carolyn Barnett. Adored by an ever-increasing brood of nieces and nephews, Bob and Carolyn had two children of their own, June (deceased) and James. After a successful career in business and finance, Bob and Carolyn found their hearts belonged in the hills of Southern Ohio. They and James moved to Bainbridge, eventually making room for Bob's father and Carolyn's mother, making for an interesting and entertaining household that welcomed everyone. After Carolyn's death in 1992, Bob developed an enduring friendship with the Mennonite Community. He continued to care for his extended family, helping build homes for siblings, their children and grandchildren, offering aid to family members in need and somehow finding just the right joke to lighten the darkest hour. Bob is preceded in death by 10 siblings and joined them on August 21, 2017 in the full glory of a solar eclipse. He would leave with us a reminder that we are the sum of our family and loved ones, making each of us a continuing part of the story that is Brother, Uncle and Friend Robert Fleming. The funeral service will beheld at 1pm Saturday, August 26, at the Haller Funeral Home & Crematory. Burial will follow in the Fleming Family Cemetery. Friends may call from 11am until 1pm Saturday.
