Richard D. Payne, 81, of Chillicothe, died at 10:41 pm, September 23, 2017, at his home, following a short battle with cancer. He was born November 20, 1935 in Chillicothe to the late George and Elizabeth Logan Payne. On February 20, 1959 he married Frances M. Johnson, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Richard D. (Kelli) Payne and Marcus S. (Robin) Payne, of Chillicothe, and Lori Payne, of Gahanna; two grandchildren, Eryn Lynn Payne and Jasmin Payne; a great- grandchild, Kennedy Belton; and two brothers, Charles Payne, of Chillicothe and Robert Payne, of Columbus. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Joe, Dennis, George, and James Payne; and two sisters, Inez Simpson and Bonita Philpot. Richard retired as a Personal Care Assistant from the VA Medical Center in 1990, following 34 years of service. He was a US Air Force veteran and member of the American Legion Post 62 and Prince Hall Ionic Lodge 6. He enjoyed reading newsprint of all sorts and was a military history buff. He also enjoyed watching football, western movies, and riding his quad runner. Military graveside services, conducted by the Ross Co. Veterans Honor Guard, will be held at the convenience of the family in Caldwell Cemetery. Calling hours will not be observed.
