Richard Gall

October 29, 1935 — March 19, 2025

Richard Olen "Dick" Gall, 89, passed away on March 19, 2025 in Mason, Ohio.

Dick was born on October 29, 1935 in Chillicothe, Ohio, the first child of Olen and Lucile (Reed) Gall. He was a 1953 graduate of Chillicothe High School, and a 1958 graduate of The Ohio State University, with a degree in Industrial Engineering (BSIE).   He married Janice Vanderbrink on April 15, 1961.

He had over thirty years of engineering and management experience in the paper industry, starting with his first job out of college at the Albemarle Paper Company in Middletown, Ohio.  While employed with Albemarle, he was called to active duty in the Air Force during the Cuban missile Crisis.  In 1963, Dick joined the Mead Corporation and held many managerial positions of increasing responsibility in Chillicothe, Escanaba, Michigan, and Kingsport, Tennessee.  Returning to Chillicothe in 1976, he was promoted to Manager, Quality Assurance and Technical Service in the Forms Division, and then to General Manager, Mead OPAS.  After bringing Mead OPAS to profitability, Dick was promoted to President and General Manager, Schoeller Technical Papers, a Mead affiliate located in Pulaski, New York, in 1985.  Reaching the executive level of a Fortune 500 corporation was a special personal and professional achievement.  While at Schoeller, he was director of the National Photographic Manufacturers Association.

Dick also had a 30 year career in the staffing industry, as co-owner of four staffing agencies operating in eleven counties in Southern Ohio.  The companies collectively became one of the largest employers in the region. The companies were sold to the Reserves Network in 2002.

He is survived by his son Eric (Shelly), daughter-in-law Stacey Gall, his sister Jane Walker (Richard), three grandchildren, Kristine Bailey, Patricia Gall and Antonio Gall, and many other loving family members.  Also surviving is Susan (Dave) Markstein, with whom Dick had a very special relationship for over 40 years, which evolved into a father/daughter bond, and her two children, who he thought of as his grandchildren, Sam Wyder and Hannah Wyder.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Janice, his oldest son, Greg, and Benjamin Wyder.

Dick was an avid golfer and legend member of the Chillicothe Country Club, which he was associated with for parts of eight decades…where he enjoyed the friendship and camaraderie of his golfing buddies.  He had two holes-in-one, won five Flight Championships, and won the Super Senior Club Championship at age 81.  He had the special personal and family achievement of winning the Chillicothe Country Club Member-Guest tournament with his son, Greg, on Father's Day weekend in 2008.

After retirement, he became a devoted volunteer at Worthington Elementary school, where he tutored Third and Fourth graders for almost twenty years in math and language arts.  This was his way to giving back to the education system that helped develop him, and to Pay Forward.  "Mr. Gall" was a well-known and popular mentor on the second floor at Worthington.

Of course, the best thing that ever happened to Dick, was when he met and married the love of his life, Janice.  For over 63 years, they shared a special spirit, bond, and sense of humor that made their love and marriage truly special.  His true passion was his family and being around the people he loved.

He was a loving and generous son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend.  Most of all he was a gentleman and a good man.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, March 29, 2025 at the Haller Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Grandview Cemetery. Friends may join the family for visitation from 11:00am until the time of the service.
