Reverend Father Richard Francis "Bird" Engle died at the age of 95 on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 while in hospice care at The Villas at St. Therese.
Fr. Engle was born on August 2, 1925 to the late Joseph L. and Catherine M. (Griffin) Engle. Fr. Engle was a son of St. Mary Magdalene Parish (Columbus). He is survived by his numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Before devoting his life to God as a priest he honorably served his country in the United States Army in the Second World War, and was wounded in the chest and lung in Normandy, for which he received the Purple Heart. Fr. Engle graduated from Aquinas High School in 1943, attended the Ohio State University from 1945 to 1949 earning a B.S. in Business Administration and graduated from St. Charles College Seminary with a B.A. in Liberal Arts in 1952. Upon completion of his Theology studies at Mount Saint Mary of the West in Norwood, Ohio, Fr. Engle was ordained to the priesthood by the Most Reverend Michael J. Ready on May 26, 1956. Among holding many different chaplaincies throughout his priesthood, past assignments include assistant pastor at Holy Redeemer (Portsmouth), St. Mary (Columbus), and St. Christopher (Columbus); instructor at St. Mary High School and Bishop Ready High School; pastor of Saint Ann (Dresden), St. Mary (Mattingly Settlement), St. Philip the Apostle (Columbus) and Immaculate Conception (Dennison) until his retirement in 1995. After retiring Fr. Engle lived at St. Mary, Chillicothe and then St. Sylvester, Zaleski before moving to the Villas at St. Therese. Sincere thanks to the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm and staff at the Villas at Saint Therese and Mother Angeline McCrory Manor for the excellent care provided to Fr. Engle. Fr. Engle was passionate about serving the poor and those in need. He got his nickname "Bird Dog" in college and has been known as "Bird" ever since.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, April 27 from 9:30 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Church, 61 South Paint Street, Chillicothe, OH 45601. The Most Reverend Robert J. Brennan, Bishop of Columbus, will celebrate the Mass; priests of the Diocese will concelebrate. Burial will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Columbus.
