Ray Detty

Ray O. Detty Ray O. Detty, 80, passed away peacefully at home, 9:40 am Monday September 18, 2006. He was born in Ross Co. on January 28, 1926 to Raymond R. and Audrey Stewart Detty. Surviving is his wife of over 60 years, the former Purle R. Riddle, who he married on January 2, 1946, and one son Timothy L. Detty, of Chillicothe. In addition to his wife and his son, Ray is survived by brothers and sisters-in-law Marvin and Geneva Detty, Hershel and Peg Detty, of Chillicothe; brother James Detty, of Palm Springs, CA; sister and brother-in-law, Beryl and Merle Bethel, of Allensville, OH; sister, Alice Andrews, of Albany, OH; brother-in-law Jack Temple, of Chillicothe and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters, Pansy Temple and Morjorie Weaver, and brothers-in-law Lawrence Weaver and James Andrews. A 1944 graduate of Southeastern High School, Ray served in the US Navy during World War II aboard the USS Keokok in the Pacific Theatre at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He operated Ray's Body Shop in Chillicothe until 1974 when he accepted the opportunity to teach his trade as one of the first faculty members of the Pickaway-Ross Career and Technology Center, where he instructed the auto body repair program. After his retirement from the school in 1988, Ray continued to serve as an advisory board member for many years. An avid golfer, Ray was one of the original founders of the Ross County Golf Association in 1955, and held many offices in the organization throughout the years. He was also a member and former officer of the Southern Ohio Beagle Club, and a member of the Ohio and Ross Co. Retired Teachers Associations. These activities as well as his career and business relationships led to the many close friends that Ray enjoyed tremendously and were very special to him. Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Saturday in the Haller Funeral Home, Rev. Charles Case officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Hills Memory Garden. Friends may call 5-8 pm Friday at Haller's. Memorial contributions may be made to the Adena Health Foundation, Friends of Hospice, 272 Hospital Rd., Chillicothe, OH 45601.
