R. Sommers

Richard Thomas "Tom" Sommers, Jr., 60, of Chillicothe, died at 3:07am, Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at Riverside Methodist Hospital, following a brief illness. He was born July 10, 1952, in Chillicothe to the late Richard T., Sr. and Bertha (Lowe) Sommers. On December 7, 1999, he married the former Peggy L. Birt, who survives. Also surviving are his daughter and son-in-law Rene` (Ryan) Ponting, of Florence, SC; step-daughter Lindsay (Michael) Johnson, Chillicothe; step-son Matthew Gillen, Augusta, GA; 5 grandchildren, including his special grandson Hudson Sommers; Breonna Ponting; Makalia Ponting; Sophia Ponting, all of Florence, SC; and Ella Johnson, Chillicothe; his sister Patty Penrod; his brother Antonio Sommers, both of Chillicothe; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and a sister Caroline "Ikie" Shewalter. Tom was a graduate of Chillicothe High School, Class of 1971. He was a retired Ross County Sherriff Deputy as well as a retired Chillicothe Police Officer. He was Past Master of the Logan Elm Lodge #624 F & AM, Kingston, and a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. Funeral services and Masonic Funeral will be conducted Friday at 7:00pm at the Haller Funeral Home. Friends may call Friday from 4-7pm at Haller Funeral Home.
