R. Gordon Langley, 95, passed away April 23, 2018, in Traditions of Chillicothe, having lived in Heritage of Traditions for eight years.
Gordon was born in Oakdale, Tennessee, the son of Welda E. and Ethel Stonecipher Langley. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Carolyn of South Bend, IN, Gary and Elaine of Pittsburgh, PA; and daughter, Sharon Gaskill of Chillicothe, three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a dear friend, Grace Stanton of Highlands Ranch, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Rema Byrd and wife Geraldine "Jeri" (Benson), brothers Lawrence, Welda Jr., Harold; a sister, Hazel Sweet; and son-in-law Charles Gaskill.   Langley came to Chillicothe in 1967 as vice-president, Finance and Administration for Wear-Ever Aluminum, Inc. and served in that capacity until he retired in 1979. Prior to that, Alcoa employed him in Pittsburgh, PA and Alcoa, TN. He was employed by Alcoa for 38 years. In 1981, he was appointed Judicial Administrator for the Ross County Court System and served in that position until 1988. He attended National Business College in Knoxville, TN and the University of Tennessee. He was a veteran of World War II and served in France and Germany in the U.S. Army Medical Department. Langley was discharged with the rank of Master Sergeant. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 62, Scioto Lodge 6, F & AM, Royal Arch Masons, Knights Templar, Ross County Shrine Club and Aladdin Temple. Langley was a member of Walnut Street United Methodist Church and served as Treasurer, Lay Leader and a member of other committees throughout his membership. Gordon was proud of his service on the Board of Trustees of Adena Regional Medical Center for fifteen years. During that period, he served as Treasurer and Chair of the Board. Other community activities included president of Ross County United Fund in 1969, service on the Board of Goodwill Industries, chair of the board of Ross County Board of Mental Retardation, Chief Logan Council, president and treasurer of the board of Boy Scouts of America. He served as a member of the Board of Trustees of Ross County chapter of American Red Cross and was treasurer for several years. He was also a member of the Ross County Hospital commission. Langley received the Silver Beaver Award from the Chief Logan Council, Boy Scouts of America in 1975; the Scouting Torch Award from the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church in 1986 and the Liberty Bell Award from the Ross County Bar Association in 1988. He was a member of the Chillicothe Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. In addition, he was a Patron of the Chillicothe Rotary Foundation. Funeral services will be held at 10am Saturday, April 28, at the Haller Funeral Home & Crematory with Rev. Scott Smith officiating. Military graveside services, conducted by the Ross Co. Veterans Honor Guard, will follow in Grandview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either: National Church Residence-Hospice, 681 E. Second St., Waverly, OH 45690; or Walnut St. UMC, 16 S. Walnut St., Chillicothe, OH 45601.
