Philip Wendell Putnam of Frankfort, Ohio died Tuesday, February 2 nd , 2021 at his home, following a brief illness.
He was born in Ross county on March 6th, 1935, the firstborn son of F. Wendell Putnam and Nellie Mae (Weller) Putnam. Phil graduated from Frankfort high school in 1953 and attended The Ohio State University. In 1955 he enlisted in the US Navy and was stationed in Sasebo, Japan where he served as a Fireman and Engineman Petty Officer, Third Class. He was honorably discharged from the United States Naval Reserve in 1961. Upon completion of his active-duty military service, Phil went to work at the Mead Paper Company where he was employed for 46 years.
On July 10, 1960 he married the former Betty Jane Gilfillan, who survives. In addition, he is survived by his two sons, Brian (Mary) and Eric (Krista), four grandsons- Jonathan (23), Matthew (19), Charles (14) and Ian (10), a sister, Marilyn (Darrell) Pate and a brother, Michael (Patty) Putnam, as well as 4 nieces, a nephew, several grand-nieces and grand-nephews and special AFS daughter Sigrun (Hilmar) Bjarnadottir.
He was a member of Walnut Street United Methodist Church, the Frankfort and Chillicothe Masonic Lodges, the Ross County Shrine Club, and the Chillicothe and Frankfort American Legions. He was a past President of the Adena Board of Education, served on the Pickaway-Ross Vocational Board and the American Legion Honor Guard, and was a past president of the Chillicothe Civil War Round Table.
Phil was an avid reader with a particular fondness for history and an expert storyteller. He loved sports, in particular the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Cincinnati Reds and the Cincinnati Bengals. He never met a stranger and anybody who knew Phil knew what a wonderfully funny, caring person he was. He gave generously and without reservation of his time and his money to anyone he felt needed help. His only flaws were his unfortunate tendency to cheat at cards and board games and the fact that he tricked his daughter-in-law into eating the cow from next door. He loved his sons and grandsons more than anything in the world and they adored their DPhil. He will be so very missed.
Due to the Coronavirus, there will not be a public funeral or calling hours. A private graveside service will be held at the family's convenience. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Chillicothe Education Foundation, 425 Yoctangee Parkway, Chillicothe, Ohio 45601, the Walnut Street Methodist Church Children's Ministry, 16 S. Walnut Street, Chillicothe, Ohio, 45601, or the charity, veteran or worthy cause of your choice. Phil never saw a person with a sign asking for assistance that he didn't stop and help. We could all learn from his example. His online memorial register is available at www.HallerFuneralHome.com.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
