Philip Evanoff, 103, passed away November 24, 2018. He was born to Vera and Philip Evanoff in Philadelphia, PA. On October 9, 1954, he married Catherine (Close) Evanoff, who preceded him in death on March 31, 2011. He was predeceased by his parents and grandparents; brothers Paul, Joseph and Peter; and a sister Margaret Soltis. Surviving are his daughter Cathy (Jeffery) Forrest, of Erie, PA; son Philip (Dawn) Evanoff, of Columbus; grandchildren: Caitie (Matthew) Duncan, Jon Forrest, Adam and Davis Evanoff; sisters Neda Yarnall and Agnes Coan, of Albuquerque, NM, and Roberta Lindquist, Tucson, AZ; sisters-in-law Margaret Evanoff, Kill Devil Hills, NC, and Jean Evanoff, Lewes, DE; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and numerous cousins in Bulgaria. He retired from Mead where he worked just short of 50 years, starting his career in Philadelphia at the Mead plant there in 1933 and transferred to Chillicothe in 1949. He retired at the end of 1982. He served in the Army during WWII from 1943-1946 and was assigned to the 59 th Field Hospital in 3 rd Army landing in France in 1944. During the war he was commissioned 1 st Lieutenant and was honorably discharged in 1946. He was a chemist and at retirement from Mead, was Director of the Sales Service Dept. He wrote and taught the Paper Knowledge Course at Mead. He was an avid mineral collector and belonged to many mineral clubs both in the US and Canada. He spoke at many of the mineral meetings he attended and was highly regarded in the field. His favorite thing was to go on their field trips and collect. In 1996, he was elected to the Micromounters Hall of Fame, an honorary Mineral Society. His other hobby was making mosaic pictures (over 700) and tile tables, many of which have been given to groups for auctions to raise money. He was also a member of the Sunset Club where he was the oldest member to ever give a speech at age 100. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am Saturday, Dec. 1, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Rev. Lawrence Hummer, Celebrant. Military graveside, conducted by the Ross Co. Veterans Honor Guard, will follow in St. Margaret Cemetery. Friends may call from 5-7pm Friday at Haller Funeral Home & Crematory, where a wake service will be held at 7pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either St. Vincent DePaul Society; or St. Mary Church, both at 61 S. Paint St., Chillicothe, OH 45601.
