US Marine PFC Paul W. Harris was killed in a helicopter crash in Vietnam on March 13, 1967 during a priority helicopter extract. He had volunteered to be the crew chief for the mission. His remains have never been recovered. Paul was born on June 24, 1947 and was the son of Clyde and Elsie M. Breckenridge Harris, of Chillicothe. He had been active in Boy Scouting, YMCA work, and was an employee of Pubic Transport, Inc. before joining the Marine Corps. His enlistment was shortly after his 1965 graduation from Chillicothe High School. Paul was scheduled to return from Vietnam the week following his death, having served there since June 1966. Surviving today are his father, Clyde Harris, of Chillicothe; sisters, Elsie "Peaches" Shabazz, Beth (Mark) Bayless, Christina (William) Yearwood, all of Portsmouth; Della (Jimmie) Prather, of Columbus; Dorcas (William) Tanner, of Orient; Dorothy (Donald) Redwood, of North Ridgeville; and brothers, Michael (Carolyn) Harris, of Germany, Clyde Raymond Harris, of Columbus, and Peter Daniel Harris, of Jackson. Paul has many nieces and nephews he never got a chance to meet and his aunts and cousins miss him greatly. The Harris family members who have passed since Paul's death include his mother, Elsie; and an infant brother, P.W., who was born and died in December of 1970. A Memorial Tribute to Paul will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2006, at 10:00 am in Soldier's Square, Greenlawn Cemetery, Eastern Ave., Chillicothe. Military honors will be conducted by Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Corps.
