Oliver Stringer

Oliver W. Stringer, 95, of Chillicothe, died at 9:45am August 11, 2005, at his residence. He was born May 29, 1910, in Bay Springs, MS, to the late Henry C. and Donnie M. (Muckelrath) Stringer. He is survived by two sisters: Doris Calloway and Minnie McKissack, both of Jackson, MS. He was predeceased by two brothers Handel and Dwinton Stringer; and two sisters Delorah Holm and Hilda Bevin. Mr. Stringer married Mary Thomas Hennigh in 1948. Two of his step-children are Tom and Mike Hennigh. His children are Marilyn Blue Stringer and Clara Stringer. His wife, Mary, died in September 1988. Following this, he married Virginia Wilkins McElhaney, who survives. Her sons are Mike, Ricke, and Robbe McElhaney, and a daughter Michelle Moseley. Mr. Stringer graduated from Wichita State University. He was an Army veteran of WWII, and later served in the Army Reserves. Retired from the Veterans Administration Hospital after 35 years of employment, his work consisted of serving as administrator and coordinator in the medical rehabilitation department. He is past National President of the Rehabilitation Directors and Coordinators Assoc., his professional organization. He received commendation for his national leadership during a conference in Indianapolis, IN, where he was also presented a key to the city. He was a member of St. Paul Episcopal Church, Chillicothe, where he served for a period on the vestry and was an active member of the choir. He was a member of the Chillicothe Evening Lions Club, American Legion Post 62, the 40 et 8, AmVets Post 4, and the Ross Co. Senior Citizens. Friends may call Saturday from 6-8pm at Haller Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm Sunday with Fr. Rick Terry officiating, and will begin with a Lions Memorial Service. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Lakewood Memorial Park, Jackson, MS. In lieu of flowers, a memorial tribute may be made to the Lions Club Sight Conservation Program, PO Box 567, Chillicothe, a program for children to have their eyes examined and given glasses if needed.
