Nilufer Ilona Woods, 98, of Chillicothe, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at her residence at The Glade in Chillicothe.
She was born on April 10, 1926, in Ankara, Turkey, the daughter of Laszlo and Elizabeth (Faber) Paranyi. On March 5, 1955, in Montreal, Canada, she married her beloved husband John "Jack" Myer Woods, who preceded her in death on April 13, 2024.
Surviving are their three children, Leyla Woods (David Paul) of Los Angeles, California, Suna Woods (Mark Johnson) of New Haven, Connecticut, and Erol Woods (Debbi) of Chadron, Nebraska; six grandchildren, Lazlo and Sylvie Paul, Aaron and Peri Votre, and Crispin Woods and Hillary (Woods) Croal; and two great grandchildren, Penelope and Brooks Croal.
Nilufer earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering at the University of Istanbul, Turkey, and later an M.S. in Analytical Chemistry at The Ohio State University. After receiving her B.S.degree, she did graduate studies in chemistry at the Sorbonne University in Paris, France. She began her professional career at Abitibi Power and Paper Company in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada. She subsequently worked at the Pulp and Paper Research Institute at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and later managed the Analytical Chemistry Lab at the Research Division of the Mead Corporation in Chillicothe.
Nilufer and her husband Jack -- whom she met at the McGill Research Institute -- loved to travel, visiting many countries across the world. Nilufer was an active member of AAUW. She also loved playing bridge, reading, walking, gardening, and spending time with beloved family and lifelong friends. She was also a devoted member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM on Monday, November 18, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Stanislaus John officiating. Nilufer's family will receive friends from 10 AM to 11 AM at St. Mary's, immediately before the Mass. After the Mass, friends are invited to join Nilufer's family for a luncheon at St. Mary's Family Life Center. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends make memorial donations to their favorite charities in her honor.
