Nedra Jane Ater Miller, 83, died in the early morning on October 29, 2010. She was born July 1, 1927 in Clarksburg, OH to Raymond "Loppy" Ater and Elizabeth Skinner Ater. Nedra attended Clarksburg and Chillicothe City Schools, Class of 1944. Her husband of 67 years, John F. "Jack" Miller, survives. She was the beloved mother of six children and spent her young married life caring for them. She was active in the Bishop Flaget Schools and an avid fan of their sports programs. With her family, she operated Ater's Lake. Many locals will remember her from summer dances. Rock and Roll remained her favorite music. She was a a long-time member of St. Mary Parish and the Nathaniel Massie Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Genealogy interested her, especially the Ross County Ater family history. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed cooking for her large family. With her children grown, she turned her attention to her 11 grandchildren, nurturing them from diapers to diplomas. She is survived by her husband; her children, Steven (Cary) Miller; Susan (James) Hill, Jacquelyn Simmons, Jo Ann Miller (Michael Harrison), David (Melea) Miller and Dr. Donna Miller (Terry Degarmo); her grandchildren, Amanda Landrum (Steven) Drotleff, Meg Landrum (Andrew) Graham, Elizabeth Simmons, John (Kerri) Simmons; Jay Harrison, Pat Harrison, Lindsey Miller, Kelly Miller, Emily Miller, Anna Marie Degarmo and Joel Degarmo. Nedra had five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Ned Ater (tap-dancing partner and good friend) and his wife Barbara; and a sister-in-law and her husband, Irene and Richard Southworth. Her family extends grateful appreciation to Dr. Cathy Bishop and Sandy Rieske CNP, for their constant attentive care and to the administration and staff of Traditions of Chillicothe, whose compassionate care enabled their mother to live her final months in comfort and with dignity. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 am, Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at St. Mary Church, Rev. Lawrence Hummer, Celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Margaret Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the St. Mary Family Life Center, immediately following the graveside services. Friends may also call 5-7 Tuesday at the Haller Funeral Home, where a wake service will be held at 7:00 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Bishop Flaget School, 570 Parsons Ave., Chillicothe, OH 45601.
