Melody Lee Smallridge, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to many, peacefully passed away on Friday, March 20, 2026, at the age of 69. Born on a cold Sunday, February 3, 1957, Melody graced the world with her warmth, compassion, and relentless dedication to both her family and community.
A proud graduate of Spencerville High School, Melody spent her career in the wholesale/retail industry where she shined as a leader, admired for her work ethic and dedication. Her commitment extended beyond the workplace as she poured her creative energy into significant community projects. She, along with her husband and a close friend, played an instrumental role in the design of the POW memorial in Veterans Park along Yoctangee Parkway— a testament to her community spirit and love for honoring those who served.
Melody’s heart was forever woven with the love of her family. She is survived by her cherished sons, Joshua Johnson and Joseph Johnson, who will carry forward her legacy of kindness and strength. Her doting grandchildren, Harleigh Johnson, Sydney Johnson, Austin Johnson, Isaiah Damron-Johnson, Joshua Damron, and Nevaeh Damron, were a constant source of joy and pride. Melody's great-grandchildren—Oaklyn, Lextyn, Everyx, Jovee, and an eagerly anticipated baby girl—were the delightful stars in her life's constellation.
Melody was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Donald Degen Sr. and Karen L. (Zuber) Degen, her treasured son Jeremiah Johnson, her devoted husband John Smallridge, her dear sister Holly Wedebrook, loving nephew Nicolas Wedebrook, and grandchild Lennyx Blazer. Her legacy continues in the love she fostered and the memories she created with her family and friends.
In her leaving, Melody leaves a space in the hearts of all who had the honor of knowing her. A Celebration of Life will be held at Brookside Christian Church at a later date, allowing family and friends to gather in shared remembrance and gratitude for her beautiful life.
Melody’s life was a melody of love, generosity, and strength; her song will continue through those she loved.
