Melissa Higgs-Horwell
October 22, 1944 — June 19, 2024
Melissa A. Higgs-Horwell, 79, of Chillicothe, OH died peacefully on June 19, 2024 at home surrounded by husband and children. Predeceased by parents Eleanore and Jim Horwell, sister Anne Stone. Survived by husband Dave Higgs-Horwell, children J.V. Eberst (Sarah), Melinda Alumbaugh (David), Walter Eberst, Gabe Higgs-Horwell (Paty), siblings Cindy Hummel, Bill Horwell, 9 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren. Born in Lancaster Ohio grew up in Logan Ohio. Upon marrying in 1975, she and Dave moved to Chillicothe. While raising children she graduated from Ohio University with a bachelors in history, then graduate studies in Library Sciences underlying her career in education technology.
Her first job was with the Rainbow School of the Hocking County Board of Developmental Disabilities, then a 20+ years media center position with Pickaway Ross Career Center, followed by Technology Coordinator for the South Central Ohio Computer Assoc., then a position with INFOhio: working to provide each preK-12 student with high quality digital resources. Overlapping recent positions she he served an 8-year term on the Shawnee State College Board of Trustees.
Melissa, never one to stay idle was an avid runner, swimmer, spin cycle teacher, voracious reader who had a passion for travel with her husband. She was intensely active in causes and a strong advocate for those less fortunate. Melissa was a prominent and impactful volunteer spanning her entire adult life in Democratic Party politics working tirelessly for local, state, and national candidates and issues. She served on the SE Ohio board of Planned Parenthood. A recent passion of hers was volunteering with the Sojourners' YouthBuild of Southeast Ohio helping those without a high school diploma get that diploma or GED along with vocational training. Through her love, compassion and intensity she made a massive impact on the lives of many.
There will be a memorial service Thursday June 27, 6pm at Haller Funeral Home 1661 Western Ave, Chillicothe, OH. The family will receive friends from 3-6pm preceding the service.
