Maurice Douglas Tanner, Sr., 71, passed away Monday, December 22, 2014. He was born February 17, 1943, in Portsmouth, OH. He attended Booker T. Washington Elementary School and graduated from Portsmouth High School. He also attended Ohio University, Portsmouth Campus. He worked for Detroit Steel Corp. in New Boston, OH, the Tosoh Specialty Metals Division in Grove City, OH, as a quality control inspector and worked for many years as an independent sales representative. Maurice grew up as a member of Allen Chapel AME Church in Portsmouth, and later joined Grace and Mercy Fellowship Center in Columbus, where he served on the pastoral care committee. Maurice was predeceased by his parents, Douglas and Gwandine Tanner. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 27 years, Sheila Yvonne Tanner; sons Maurice Tanner, Jr., of California; Maurice Carter, of Atlanta, GA; a step-son Jeffrey Andre (Lourdes) Barton, of Castro Valley, CA; daughters Tammy Tanner, Detroit, MI; Stephanie (Michael) Degree, Tijuana, Mexico; a brother Marlan R. (Bonadine) Tanner, Columbus; a sister Rev. Melonie (Richard) Valentine, Chillicothe; eleven grandchildren; a great-grandson; and a host of many relatives. He also leaves many friends including special friends Bishop Roy B. Lisath, Harvey Richardson, and Donnell and Sue Watkins. Funeral services will be held at Noon, Saturday January 3, at the Haller Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 11am-12pm Saturday at Haller Funeral Home.
