Marilyn Rife

October 12, 1941 — December 29, 2021

Marilyn Dwight Rife, 80, of Chillicothe, OH died Wednesday, December 29, 2021, at her home.

She was born in Huntington, WV, October 12, 1941.  She was the oldest of three children of Carolyn Fore Dwight (professor of business and economics at Marshall University) and Charles Eugene Dwight (owner/manager of Dwight Florist, and later became an educator and principal).  When Marilyn was age 14, she began traveling from Huntington, by train, to Peekskill, NY, where she attended and eventually graduated at the top of her class (from St. Mary's, a private school for girls).  After graduating, Marilyn attended Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY for over two years.  She graduated from Marshall University in Huntington and taught school in Fairfax Co., VA.  She received a Master's Degree from Ohio State University, Columbus, OH in Educational Psychology.  She worked as a school psychologist (a relatively new field) in Ohio and West Virginia.  She married Harry Pettus (Pete) Rife, an attorney, and lived in Kettering, then Oakwood, OH.  Marilyn later moved to Huntington, WV, then to Chillicothe, OH, where she lived the rest of her life.

She is survived by her sons, Alan Rife, of Chillicothe and Craig Rife.  She is also survived by a sister, Beverly Dwight, Atlanta, GA, who became a school psychologist (and worked in Georgia, California, and at international schools in Russia and France) because of the influence and trailblazing of her older sister.  Marilyn is also survived by her brother-in-law (Beverly's husband) Jerry Struchen, retired special agent, and sister-in-law, Andrea Dwight, an artist (Valrico, FL).  Her beloved brother Stephen, an Industrial Engineer (WVU) and MBA graduate (Georgia Tech/Univ. of Georgia) worked as the Deputy Command Engineer at US Special Operations Command Headquarters at MacDill Air Force Base, Tampa, FL.  When Stephen was in college, Marilyn helped him financially, at a difficult time, after their parents and sister moved to California.  Stephen remembered Marilyn's generosity and supportiveness throughout his life.  Stephen preceded his sister in death in 2020.

Burial will be in the Dwight family plot, where her parents are buried, in Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington, WV.
