Mabel L. Morton, 93, of Chillicothe, passed away November 2, 2013 at the Ohio State Medical Center, following a brief illness. She was born in Frankfort, Ohio on January 6, 1920 to the late Frank and Maude Ella (Locklear) Cooper. On August 24, 1947 she married James Gilbert Morton who preceded her in death on July 9, 1995. Mother Mabel is survived by a daughter, Bonadine (Marlan) Tanner, of Columbus; eight grandchildren, Cornel James (Andrea) Wilkinson, of Richmond, VA; Daymond (Teri) Wilkinson, of Dayton; Cielita (Barbacar) Morton-Diop, Marlana Tanner, and Lennon Brown, all of Columbus; six great-grandchildren, Courtney, Linda, Mercedes, Bradley, Daymond II, and James Ethan; a Goddaughter, Bonita Duncan; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, including two special nieces, Carol Liggins, and Paula Ross, and a special nephew, Raymond Cooper II, who visited and contacted her often; and good friends, Mildred Martin, and Jeffrey (Cynthia) Lewis. In addition to her parents and husband, Mabel was preceded in death by a daughter, Anita (Morton) Wilkinson Warren, and her eleven siblings. Mother Mabel was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Chillicothe. She was involved in many organizations within the church including being a member of the Senior, Mass, and Gospel choirs, a member of the Trustee Board, and served as Treasurer for 18 years. She also served in various offices of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #6 OES/PHA and the Daughter of the Isis for over 65 years. Mother Mabel served her family in many different ways, and was widely known as the "Matriarch of the Cooper Family". She was seen as a mother to many people, and had helped raise a lot of her nieces and nephews. Her longevity will never be forgotten. Funeral services will be held at 12:00pm on Friday, November 8, 2013, at the First Baptist Church, with Rev. Jonathan McReynolds and Pastor Robert Hitchens officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Frankfort. Friends may call from 10:00am to 12:00pm on the day of the service, where an Eastern Star service will be held at 11:45.
