Lorraine Agnes Schouweiler Hill
July 1, 1927, to March 20, 2026
Lorraine Agnes Schouweiler Hill, age 98, a longtime resident of Chillicothe, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home on March 20, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born July 1, 1927, on the family farm in Glasgow Township near Kellogg, Minnesota, Lorraine was the daughter of Paul Frank Schouweiler and Agnes Josephine Graner Schouweiler. As the oldest daughter in a family of six, she grew up on a dairy farm during the Great Depression—experiences that shaped her lifelong values of perseverance, faith, humility, and hard work. “She was educated in a one-room schoolhouse and excelled academically,” skipping two grades and graduating as valedictorian at sixteen.
At seventeen, Lorraine left home to train as a teletype operator in Minneapolis. Her skill and dedication led to advanced training at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska and later to a position at Wright Field near Dayton, Ohio. There she met Jesse Welborn Hill, the love of her life. They married in 1948 in Richmond, Indiana, and built their life together in Chillicothe, where Jesse worked for the Veterans Administration until he retired in 1979. He died in 1989 from cancer.
Lorraine was the devoted mother of eight children, a role she embraced with her whole heart.
Surviving is:
She was preceded in death by her son Donald (Blanca) Hill of Laredo, Texas, in 2021, and by her infant son Charles Hill in 1952. She is also survived by twenty grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
At age fifty, Lorraine returned to school—attending nursing classes alongside her daughter Patricia—and proudly became a Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked at Westmoreland Nursing Home and prior to that she worked in the catalog department at JCPenney. Her compassion, steadiness, and quiet competence made her a natural caregiver long before she earned the title “nurse.”
A member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church since 1953, Lorraine lived her faith through service, including her work on the bereavement committee. Her faith was the foundation of her life, and she passed that legacy on to her children and grandchildren.
Lorraine was the final surviving member of her immediate family, as she was predeceased by her parents, husband, sons, and siblings—Leo, Donald, John, Paul, and Alice.
“Her calling in life was her family.” She nurtured, encouraged, and guided each child with a unique and personal love. She tended every cut, scrape, burn, toothache, and childhood illness; she cooked countless meals; she attended more school events and sporting contests than anyone could count. She was the calmest, most even keeled redhead her family ever knew.
Lorraine lived a full and curious life. She traveled throughout the United States and Europe, enjoyed walking and biking well into her nineties, and was a voracious reader. Jeopardy and crossword puzzles were part of her daily routine, and she jokingly referred to Alex Trebek and Bill O’Reilly as “the leading men in her life.” She sewed, knitted, quilted, fished, and created a home filled with warmth, humor, and unwavering love.
For decades, family and friends from across the country gathered to celebrate her birthday as a testament to the impact she had on every generation. She was the cherished matriarch of a large and grateful family.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Anita, RN, and the NCR Hospice team for the exceptional care, compassion, and support they provided to Lorraine and her family.
Because of Christ’s resurrection, her family takes comfort in believing she now dwells in heaven and looks forward to the day they will be reunited.
