Lewis Thomas Smith Sr. walked into the hand of God on Monday, January 2, 2012. He was born August 14, 1920 in Coshocton, OH to the late Elsie Thomas Scott and Henry Smith, of Detroit, MI. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corp. during World War II. He married his sweetheart, Norma Austin, on December 5, 1943 and enjoyed 68 years of marriage. To this union were born four children, Lewis Jr., who preceded him in death, Cecelia Howard, of Chillicothe, Jeffrey Smith, of Chula Vista, CA, and Norman Smith, of Hollister, CA; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grand children; and 7 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son; and a brother, Henry Smith. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Lewis retired from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Chillicothe, after 39 years of service; and from the Chillicothe Gazette, after 23 years of service. He loved being outdoors and spent his time hunting, fishing, golfing and working in his own yard. He always had a joke or funny story to tell, and he never met a stranger. He was a member and former usher at Zion Baptist Church. The family wishes to thank everyone for their prayers, phone calls, and the many acts of kindness shown. Graveside funeral services will be held 1:00 pm Friday in Greenlawn Cemetery, Rev. J. Troy Gray officiating. Calling hours will not be observed. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
