Leila Justine Martin, 91, died Sept. 7 after a lengthy illness. She was born June 28,1933, to Ernest and Jewell (Thornton) Roach in Lawrence County, Ohio.
On Feb. 17, 1951, she was married to Donald "Pepper" Martin, who died Aug. 9, 2000. She is survived by two sons: Dr. Jeffrey Kim (Jane) Martin of Chillicothe and Columbus and Gregory Kent (Kim Susan) Martin of Delaware, OH; grandchildren: Allison (Dave) Dluzynski of Medina, OH, Matthew Martin of Columbus, Brandon (Kate) Martin of Rushkin, FL and Nathan (Molly) Martin of Lexington, KY; great-grandchildren, Lily and Madeleine Dluzynski and Leo Martin; a sister, LaVersa (John) Motes; several nieces and nephews, and special friends, Sandie Haas, Jan Grant and Sally Vasey.
Leila lived in Ironton, Ohio, until 1945 when the family moved to Chillicothe. While in high school, she worked at the candy counter in Kresge's on N. Paint St. She was a 1950 graduate of Chillicothe High School and a 1951 graduate of Ohio Cosmetology School. She was employed by Sears and helped prepare the store for its opening in the Chillicothe Mall in 1965. In 1979, she was transferred to manage a Sears store in Frankfurt, KY. She retired from Sears in 1989. She and her husband moved to Plant City, FL where she was a volunteer for several years with Plant City's annual Strawberry Festival. She also lived in Lakeland, FL for many years. She moved back to Chillicothe in 2023.
In earlier years, she was an excellent bowler and served as president of the Chillicothe Women's Bowling Association. She is a member of the Chillicothe/Ross County Women's Bowling Hall of Fame. Leila is a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. She is a former member of the Altrusa Club and Daughters of the American Revolution.
Following cremation, graveside committal services will be held at 1pm Friday, Sept. 20, 2024, in Greenlawn Cemetery, with Pastor Chris Brown officiating.
