Larry Gilbert Penisten 74, of Chillicothe, after surviving a debilitating stroke in 2010 passed away suddenly on Friday evening, November 12, 2021 at the Adena Regional Medical Center.
He was born July 27, 1947, in Chillicothe, Ohio, son of the late Oscar Sylvester and Leona Evelyn (Saltz) Penisten. On December 12, 1981, he married his beloved wife, Deborah (Conley) Penisten who survives.
Also surviving, his son, Gregory Penisten of Chillicothe, C. Patrick (Charlie Stewart) Hopkins, of Columbus, Jeffrey (Jennifer) Hopkins of Piketon, and Amy (Tom) McGuire, of Chillicothe; grandchildren, Kyle Jahner, of Washington, Brandon (Jessica) Garten, of Chillicothe, Amos Penisten, of Bainbridge, Megan (Adam Roe) Hopkins, of Piketon, Lauren (Nick) Rose, of Chillicothe, Michael Comer, of Frankfort, Stone Comer, of Chillicothe, Nick ( Olivia) Comer of Chillicothe, Tommy (Marlee Brown) McGuire, of Chillicothe and Sean McNamee, of Millersport; great-grandchildren, Ariel and Mason McNamee, of Millersport, Axeton and Zeke Comer, of Chillicothe, Avery Comer, of Frankfort, Aiken, Lennox and Norah Comer, Benson Szoke, of Chillicothe, Noah Wright and Thomas McGuire, of Chillicothe, Atreus Garten, of Chillicothe, Alistair Roe, of Piketon, and E.J. Rose, of Chillicothe, and Marshall Rose, due in December; siblings, Russell (Jackie) Graves, of Chillicothe, Kathy Smith, of Chillicothe, Judy (David) Recob, of Groveport, and Mike ( Kathy) Graves, of Circleville; and two nieces, Tiffany Graves and Kristi Recob. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by stepdaughter, Andrea Nicole Hopkins, granddaughter-in-law, Taylor (Tripp) McNamee, brother-in-law, Donald Smith and his step-father, Russell Graves.
Larry was a graduate of Chillicothe High School, class of 1966. He went on to enlist in the United States Army, honorably serving from 1966-1968. During his enlistment he was stationed in An Khê, Vietnam, where he served in the HHC 4th Battalion, 37th Armor, and Company D 2nd Battalion 5th Calvary. He earned his Purple Heart on March 29, 1967, along with the Vietnam Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Marksman Badge. He worked as a Correctional Officer at CCI, and later retired from RCI in 2009. He was a member of the Lighthouse Baptist Church in Chillicothe and also a member of the AMVETS. He was known among family and friends to be a sports fanatic, always rooting for his local Chillicothe Cavaliers, The Ohio State Buckeyes, and the Cleveland Browns. He loved spending time with his family and for many years his dog, Madison.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, November 19, 2021 at the Haller Funeral Home with Pastor Ryan Bevan officiating. Military graveside honors conducted by the Ross County Veterans Honor Guard will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery. Friends may join the family for a visitation from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm on Thursday evening at the funeral home.
