Kent Shafer Kirkwood, 83, of Chillicothe, passed away February 28, 2014, in Chillicothe. He was born December 29, 1930 in North Loup, Nebraska to the late John F. and Pearl Mary Heim Kirkwood. In the summer of 1941 his family moved to Chillicothe, and he graduated from Chillicothe High School in 1948. He was outstanding in high school sports, including football, baseball, basketball, track and tennis. On April 5, 1951 he married his high school sweetheart Donna J. Rinehart, who survives. Also surviving are his sons, Jeff, of Union, KY and Craig and wife Regina, of Hamlin, PA; granddaughters, Sybil of North Plainfield, NJ and Rachel and husband Eric Marcolina, Scotch Plains, NJ; great-granddaughters, Grace, Samantha, and Roxanne Marcolina, of Scotch Plains, NJ; a sister, Geraldine Stiles, of Monroe, NC; a brother, Edward Kirkwood, of Chillicothe; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, John W. and David M. Kirkwood. Mr. Kirkwood was a US Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict aboard the destroyer USS Haynesworth, and was honorably discharged in 1954. He was awarded the National Defense Ribbon, United Nations Ribbon, and the Korean Medal of Good Conduct. Kent and Donna moved to Columbus in 1956 and returned to Chillicothe in 2003. He practiced barbering on the east side of Columbus (Berwick area) for over 40 years. He was a very loving and devoted husband, Dad and Pa-paw, and a caring friend and neighbor. Special thanks to the doctors and staff of the Adena Regional Medical Center ICU and Comfort Care, Brookside Church and close neighbors and friends. Funeral services will be held 3:00 pm Tuesday at the HALLER FUNERAL HOME. Friends may call two hours prior to the funeral at Haller's.
