Karen R. Kern, 80, of Chillicothe, passed away on Sunday morning, September 15, 2019, at Signature Healthcare in Chillicothe, following an extended illness.
She was born April 28, 1939 in Des Moines, Iowa, daughter of the late Robert B and Ruth E. Dickson. On October 21, 1961, she married John "Jack" D. Kern, Jr., nearly 49 years of marriage before his passing on September 2, 2010.
Surviving are their three daughters, Julie A. (David Rice) Peters, of Chillicothe, Tammy L. (Todd) Freeman, of Newton, NC, and Jennifer E. (Tom) Russell, of Keene, NH; seven grandchildren, Christopher (Paige) Bagshaw, Thomas Anderson, Nathan Russell, Lauren Russell, Jacklyn Anderson, Shane Freeman, and Claire Russell; two great-grandchildren, Raelynn Johnson and John Bagshaw; one sister, Nikki (Mike) Matheny; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and good friends from Lake White. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Jerry McDonald, Gwen (Keith) Reed, and Sally (Spike) Niggemeyer.
Karen was a graduate of Berne Union High School in Sugar Grove, Ohio. She went on to open the first corporate run daycare facility as an employee benefit to the employees of the Hadco Corporation, which gained her recognition from Barbara Bush. In her free time, she enjoyed sewing and making clothes for her children, working crossword puzzles, playing cards, and listening to oldies music. She was also known to be a huge Ohio State Buckeyes Football fan.
The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Kara from the Adena Hospice group for all her love and support.
Friends are invited to join the family on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at the Haller Funeral Home from 11:00am until 1:00pm for a visitation. At her request, there will be no funeral service held.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Alzheimer's Association to help with research.
