Karen Groves

Karen Louise (Cunningham) Groves, 73, passed away on July 17, 2023, following an extended illness. Karen was born May 3, 1950 in Manhattan, Kansas and lived most of her life in Chillicothe, OH, until recently moving with her husband, Richard, to Guyton, GA, to be near her sons.   Karen married Richard E. Groves on April 11, 1970, who survives. Also surviving are her sons, Aaron Groves (Betsey Jenkins), of Talahi Island, GA, and Aric Groves, of Guyton, GA.  She is also survived by her sister, Brenda (Cunningham) Francis, of New Philadelphia, OH, a brother, Edward P. Cunningham, of West Jefferson, OH, father-in-law Robert (Doc) Groves, brothers- and sisters-in-law Elizabeth Groves, Robert "Rocky" (Suzanne) Groves, Abby Susanne Groves and Gregory Scott Groves. along with numerous nieces and nephews, and other family members in Germany.   She was pre-deceased by her daughter, Abby Francine Groves, her mother, Lina Luise Cunningham, her twin sisters, Linda S. and Mary E. Cunningham and her brother, Hugh Patrick "Pat" Cunningham. Karen was also pre-deceased by her mother-in-law, Verna Groves, and brother-in-law, Danny Groves.   Karen grew up with her sister and two brothers in Chillicothe, graduating from Bishop Flaget High School in 1968. Karen had worked at the Mead Paper Company and had returned to college later in life, receiving her Bachelors degree in Education from Ohio University and a Masters of Education degree from Ashland College. Karen was a long-time teacher in the Chillicothe City School District, retiring after 23 years of service.   In retirement, Karen enjoyed visiting and reminiscing with her friends and former classmates from Bishop Flaget. She enjoyed traveling with Richard, and had a passion for gardening, reading, and collecting books.   Karen's family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to Betsey Jenkins for her ongoing care and assistance, and to her hospice care team, in particular to Michelle and Tina who provided nursing support.   The family will receive friends Tuesday from 4-7pm Tuesday, July 25, 2023 at Haller Funeral Home & Crematory.  Private graveside inurnment will take place at the convenience of the family at Grandview Cemetery.
