Karen L. Engard, 66, of Chillicothe, died on June 22, 2023, at 6:05am, at Hospice of Central Ohio, OSU Wexner, following a brief but courageous battle with leukemia. She was born July 7, 1956, in Chillicothe to George L. Johnson and Virginia Brown. On December 23, 1982, she married Michael L. Engard, who preceded her in death on February 14, 2000. Surviving is her daughter Christa Hoffner; grandson Donovan Hoffner, both of Chillicothe; her father George Johnson, of Washington D.C.; 4 brothers: Rob (Zenaida) Hitchens, of Chillicothe; Todd (Katherine) Hitchens, Londonderry; Warren Moody and Kevin Moody, both of Chillicothe; two half-sisters: Betty (Jimmy) Chestnut, of Evansville, Indiana; Melissa Johnson, of Blythwood, South Carolina, and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her husband and mother, she was predeceased by an infant daughter Nicole Austin; a half-brother George Johnson Jr., and her grandparents James and Jessie Brown. Karen was a graduate of Chillicothe High School, Class of 1974. She had worked as an office clerk for the Budd Co. in Frankfort for over 17 years. Karen was a "people-person." She loved visiting with people, was kind-hearted, supported many charities, enjoyed working in the yard, and tinkering with things using her many tools and gadgets. However, her family, especially her daughter and grandson, meant the most to her, as did her beloved dog Jaxson Brown. Her funeral service will be held at 12:00pm Wednesday, June 28, at the Haller Funeral Home & Crematory. Burial will follow in Grandview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4-7pm Tuesday and 1 hour prior to the funeral Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, Karen asked that donations be made in her memory to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, The James Cancer Hospital, or a local charity of your choosing.
