Joseph W. Pope, 47, of Chillicothe, died Wednesday July 22, 2009 due to sudden heart failure and pneumonia. He was born January 10, 1962 in Dorton, KY to James R. and Lillian Smallwood Pope. On August 18, 1994 he married Deborah C. Marcum. In addition to his wife, survivors include a brother, Edward (Dorothy) Pope, 3 sisters, Linda (Richard) Beasley, of NC, Arlene (Eddie) Shore, of Ironton, OH, and Debbie (John) Akers, of Ashland, KY; 6 nieces and nephews including a special nephew John Michael Akers, who was very close to Joe and his wife. Joseph served in the US Army and was a decorated veteran. He served in Germany and fought in Desert Storm during the Persian Gulf War. He was a member of the Disabled Veterans of America, serving 9 years in Baltimore as a Professional National Service officer. After retiring in 2006 and moving to Ohio he concentrated on animal welfare issues. He joined People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and volunteered for PAWS in Chillicothe. He loved to fish, feed the deer that would come into his back yard, and to take his dog, Tucker, and listen to his music on his IPOD as they walked. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Funeral services will be held 3:00 pm Monday in the Haller Funeral Home, Rev. John Burris officiating. Military graveside services will be held at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery. Calling hours will not be observed. Memorial contributions may be made to his favorite charity, the Disabled American Veterans.
