Joseph Carl Bennett, M.D. passed from this life at home on March 18, 2021. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Judith Elaine (Shaw) Bennett; his children: Jodi Carol Bennett and her husband, Jeffery Hubert Webb, Liza Bennett Canowitz, and Joseph Carl Bennett, Jr. and his wife, Kristin Brown Bennett. Also surviving to cherish the memory of their beloved Poppy are his grandchildren: Emma Roderick and her fiancé, Casey Walters, William Roderick, Simon Roderick, Abram Canowitz, Meryn Canowitz, Jillian Canowitz, Lilah Bennett, and Molly Bennett. He is further survived by his sister, Barbara Carter and her husband, James Carter, his brother Robert Bennett, MD and his wife Becky Bennett, and his brother William Bennett, MD and his wife, Sue Bennett and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Joe was born on July 26, 1947, the eldest son of Paul E. Bennett, MD and Ruth Braunlin Bennett, MD in Cincinnati, OH. He graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1965 where he and Judy began their journey together. He graduated from the Ohio State University in 1969 and from the Ohio State University Medical School in 1973. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Riverside Methodist Hospital in 1976. He then began to practice medicine at the Franklin Clinic in Chillicothe, joining Jack Franklin, MD, John Seidensticker, MD, and David Smith, MD. After 30 years with Adena, Joe joined his daughter, Jodi, at the Glatfelter Medical Clinic for an additional 5 years. Joe retired from the practice of medicine in 2011. He felt honored to have been entrusted with the care of his many patients, all of whom he considered friends. Joe enjoyed watching his grandchildren do anything. He loved his many fishing trips to the Gulf with his son, Joey, his brother, Bob, and his good friend and partner, John Seidensticker. Joe spent many hours surface hunting for Native American artifacts with his great friend, Gary Argabright, and he was always glad to play racquetball while he was able. Joe could be seen many times running through town with his daughters, Jodi and Liza, who even convinced him to run a marathon with them. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, John Bennett; and his niece, Ashley Carter. The Bennett family would like to thank Joe's wonderful caregivers: Hospice angels Lindsey, Kilee, Jodi, Beautiful Emily, Autumn, Krissie, special volunteer, Bill Seidensticker, John Seidensticker, MD, Emma and Will Roderick, Lindsey Brown, Logan Mess, Donna Meadows, and special family friend, Sherry Smith. Finally, grateful thanks and love to Joe's sisters-in-law, Lenora Bernardo and Barbara Porginski, who tirelessly cared for the entire Bennett family, especially Joe and Judy for the past 5 years. Private graveside services will be held in Grandview Cemetery under the direction of Haller Funeral Home & Crematory with Pastor Scott Rawlings officiating. Calling hours will not be observed. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Arc of Appalachia, Ross County Historical Society, Scioto Society, Mound City, or Frontal Temporal Dementia research.
