John William Trainer, 80, of Chillicothe, died Friday, June 29, 2018, at his home.
He was born January 28, 1938 in Chillicothe to the late Walter C. and Florence R. Betz Trainer. On June 21, 1959 he married Mary Jane Weir Trainer, who survives. Also surviving are his two sons, Brad Allen (Carma) Trainer, of Frankfort; Ron Douglas (Pamela) Trainer, of Centerville and three grandchildren; Joshua (Amanda) Trainer, Stacey (Cassidy) Stephens and Shayna Trainer; two step-grandchildren; Dawn (Jim) Swayne and Heather (Gary) Rose; eight great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and a step-great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by four siblings, Marda Kengle, David Trainer, Thomas Trainer, and Linda Trainer.
John was a veteran of the US Air Force and the Air National Guard with his last tour of duty in the 121 st Tactical Fighter Squadron stationed in Etain, France. He retired as Captain and Arson Investigator from the Chillicothe Fire Department and later from the City of Chillicothe as Safety Service Director. He was an instructor with the State Fire Academy and trained many firefighters throughout the state.
John was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the American Legion Post 62. He served as past president of the IAFF Local 300, the Phoenix Fire Company #2, the Ohio Civil Service Employees Association and the Southern Ohio Fire and Arson Investigators Association. He was actively involved in Scouting from 1948 to 1980, serving in multiple leadership positions, attending two National Jamborees and receiving multiple certificates of recognition. John was the first Ohio recipient of the George Meany Award for outstanding community service.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Friday, July 6, 2018 at the Haller Funeral Home & Crematory, Pastor Greg Elliott officiating. Graveside services, conducted by the Ross Co. Veteran's Honor Guard and the Chillicothe Fire Department, will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery. Friends may call 4-7 pm Thursday at Haller's.
