John Wesley Stokes Sr., 80, of Tampa, FL, died 11:45 pm, Sunday, September 18, 2011, at his home, following an extended illness.
He was born December 9, 1930 in Philadelphia, MS to Leonard and Alois Howell Stokes. On August 22, 1950 he married the former Evelyn N. Bunyard, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Carol Lynn (Jerry) Lovell, of Dyersburg, TN, Debora (Gary) Stevens, of Chillicothe, Susan Rothmel, of Charlotte, NC, and John (Jonathan) W. Stokes, Jr., Tampa, FL; 9 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; a brother and a sister. He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers-in-law.
Mr. Stokes retired from the United States Air Force in 1972. He also retired as an operator of an Exxon Service Station in Tampa, FL.
Military graveside funeral services, conducted by the Ross Co. Veterans Honor Guard, will be held 2:00 pm Thursday, in Grandview Cemetery, under the direction of the Haller Funeral Home.
