John Rourke

John K. Rourke, 83, of Chillicothe, died at 11:55pm January 8, 2024, at Traditions of Chillicothe, following an extended illness.
He was born October 21, 1940, in Franklin, New Hampshire, to the late Michael J. and Mary (McDermott) Rourke. On February 10, 1962, he married the former Mary Catherine "Katie" Mahaffey, who survives.
Also surviving are their children: Aaron Rourke, of Springboro, OH, Bridget Rourke (Richard Arnold) of Chillicothe, Shawn (Deborah) Rourke, of Chillicothe, Timothy Rourke, of Sidney, OH; 6 grandchildren: Nicholas and Jared Rourke, Matthew (Anchor Loesch) and Mary Arnold, Daniel and David Rourke; siblings: Mary (Jean) DeKerion, Joan (Judith Mann) Rourke, and Kevin (Jane) Rourke; a sister-in-law Linda Rourke; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Michael and Richard Rourke and his sister Anne Rourke.
John was a graduate of Catholic Central High School, Class of 1958. He has Associate Degrees from Ohio University and Shawnee State University. John retired from the Mead Paper Co. in 1999 after 40 years of employment, where he worked as a senior technician in the research department. During his time at Mead Research, he was named as either the lone inventor, or as a member of a team, on 20 US and international patents. John was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and for many years was also involved in volunteer activities on behalf of Bishop Flaget School, Habitat for Humanity and Adena Regional Medical Center. He was also a strong supporter of the American Red Cross and donated 204 pints of blood.
John has bequeathed his body to the Ohio State University Department of Medicine for scientific research. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11AM Monday, January 15 th , at St. Mary Catholic Church, Rev. Lawrence Hummer, Celebrant. The family will receive friends and loved ones from 2-4PM Sunday, January 14 th at the Haller Funeral Home & Crematory.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks to consider a donation to Bishop Flaget School, 570 Parsons Ave., Chillicothe, OH 45601.
