John Mayfield

November 4, 1942 — February 1, 2024

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of John Howard Mayfield on February 1 st , 2024, at the age of 81.

Born November 4 th , 1942, in Columbus OH to the late William and Emily (Blackburn) Mayfield, he was raised in German Village with his two brothers and graduated from Columbus South High School in 1961. He enjoyed 55 years of marriage to the love of his life Susan (Turner), who he wed August 17 th 1968.

John was a proud Vietnam Veteran and member of the US Army for 26 years, serving 4 years of active duty and staying fit and ready for service during his 22 years in the Army Reserves. His commitment to serving his country was such a defining part of him. He paid the ultimate price for his dedication, as his passing was the result of Agent Orange-related illnesses that he battled bravely and privately for the last 25 years. He never regretted his service and was a patriot until the end.

John's biggest passion was cars, with a strong preference for hot rods and Corvettes. His 1959 Corvette was well-known around town, and the envy of every teenage boy who saw it. He restored that car from scratch, by hand, and loved driving it and taking it to car shows, where it received over 50 awards. He really had fun with his cars, once buying his wife a flame-painted hot rod that could pull wheelies, and souping up a Mustang whose upgraded electrical system would disrupt all the radios around it.

John was a transplant to Chillicothe, moving to town with Susan in 1970 due to a job opportunity. He never wanted to leave, receiving a warm welcome from the community and finding it a great place to raise a family. Over the decades he was on bowling leagues and in card clubs, was both a Shriner and a Mason, coached and led sports and school activities, and collected friends from all walks of life. John truly never met a stranger.

His career was spent as an insurance adjuster and investigator, first with Motorist's Insurance and then Westfield Insurance. John retired in 1999 and enjoyed the fruits of his decades of hard work traveling with his wife and brothers.

John is survived by his wife Susan; children Robert (Angela) Mayfield and Pam (Jon) Rice; grandchildren Jessie, Cassie, Rachel, and Caitlin; great-granddaughter Sienna; brother Bill (Agnes); and sisters-in-law Greta and Sally. He was pre-deceased by his parents, his brother Tom, his brother-in-law Tom, and grandson Matt.

Family and friends are invited to share memories during visiting hours on Thursday, February 22 nd , 4-6PM at Haller's Funeral Home, 1661 Western Avenue, Chillicothe.
