It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John N. Gunning III on September 20, 2024, at the age of 78. John passed peacefully at 4pm, surrounded by the love of his family, and is no longer in pain. He was born in Columbus, Ohio on February 9
th
, 1946, to John and Olive Gunning. John is survived by his beloved wife, Lynne Gunning, his sister Lani (Paul) Francis (Chillicothe, OH), his children Carey and (Curt) Kaufman (Charlotte, NC) and John N. Gunning IV (Henderson, NV), and his cherished grandchildren, Kirsten Kaufman, Kylie Gunning, and Audrey Gunning.
John was a graduate of the Chillicothe High School (1964) and graduated with a OD from The Ohio State University (1970). He competed in the Olympic trials in 1964 for diving. John was a collegiate diver and cheerleader for The Ohio State University. He enjoyed a long fulfilling career as an Optometrist, where he took great pride in caring for his patients and serving his community. Member of the Ohio Optometric Society, Past President of the Rotary Club of Chillicothe, member of the First Presbyterian Church and served in various capacities for the church. Beyond his professional accomplishments, John will be remembered for his love of life's finer things. He was an avid golfer, always seeking the perfect game, and passionate bourbon lover, appreciating the moments spent in good company.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, and John's warmth, wisdom, and humor left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
The family will receive friends on Monday, October 7 th , from 11:00am to 1:00pm at the Haller Funeral Home. A Celebration of John's life will begin at 1:00pm followed by burial at Grandview Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to attend and honor his memory.
In lieu of flowers I know John would love to have a donation on his behalf to the American Cancer Society@Cancer.org.
