John Corcoran

John L. Corcoran, 83, of Chillicothe, died at his home, surrounded by family and friends, at 5:40 pm Sunday, September 24, 2006, following an extended illness. He was born September 14, 1923 in Chillicothe, OH to the late John P. & Florentine Schneider Corcoran. On May 16, 1953 he married Doris Eileen Hart, who preceded him in death on December 30, 2002. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Donald W. Corcoran, his daughter, Ellen Jane Corcoran, and his grandson, Connor Hart Corcoran. Surviving are 15 children: John (Cheri) Corcoran, Oxford, OH; Kathy (Brad) Sutter, South Salem; Susan (Greg) Knight and Michael (Lana) Corcoran, Chillicothe; Jody (Tom) Rittenhouse, Waverly; Judy (Tony) Liles, Waxhaw, NC; Peggy Corcoran, David Corcoran, Joe (Michelle) Corcoran, Paul (Ceil) Corcoran, Nick (Mona) Corcoran and Janet Corcoran, Chillicothe; Chuck (Kasey) Corcoran, Alexandria, VA; Doug (Teresa) Corcoran and Angie (Aaron) Brown, Chillicothe; 31 grandchildren: Lyndsay, J.T. and Derek Corcoran; Jessica Mayer; Stephanie Corcoran; Steve, Sam and Sean Knight; Caroline Corcoran; Ryan (Kourtnee) Janes; T.J. and Tonya Liles and Karen (Adam) Fincher; Dustin, Jason, Matt and Amy Weaver; Benjamin, Luke and Macy Corcoran; Josh and Max Corcoran; Kenneth, Taylor, Emily and Nicholas Corcoran; Grace Corcoran; Kyelle and Gabe Corcoran; and Christian and Simon Brown; 3 great-grandchildren: Sophie Liles, Xanatos Fincher and Lester Corcoran; 5 step-grandchildren: Brandon and Dustin Sutter; Sonya and Tony Rittenhouse, and Julie (John) Cooper; 3 step-great grandchildren: Gwen and Olivia Cooper; and Jordyn Rittenhouse; 2 sisters, a brother, and a sister-in-law: Katherine (Dick) Wolf, Columbus; Eileen (George) Lovensheimer, Chillicothe; David (Barb) Corcoran, Des Plaines, IL; and Joanne Corcoran, Chillicothe; and numerous nieces and nephews. John graduated from Catholic Central High School, Chillicothe, in 1941. Following high school he attended Ohio State University, earning a degree in Agriculture. In 1953 he married his beloved Doris and embarked on his proudest journey – fatherhood. In addition to raising 16 children, John was a successful farmer and entrepreneur as well as an ardent supporter of 4-H, highlighted by over 35 years of service as Advisor of the "We Feed 'Em Well" Club. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus for over 50 years. A loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, son and uncle, he led a life of caring, sharing and volunteering that is a model for us all. Our Lord has taken him to bless His Kingdom with his kindness, but he will forever be our ray of hope and our guiding light. John was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, where Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am Friday, September 29, 2006, with Fr. William Hahn and Fr. Charles Griffin, celebrants. Burial will follow in St. Margaret Cemetery. After the burial, friends and family are invited to a bereavement dinner in the St. Peter Parish Hall. Friends may call on Thursday from 3-8 pm at Haller Funeral Home, where a wake service will be held at 8:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the St. Peter Church Building Fund or the Adena Regional Medical Center Oncology Department.
