Johanna French

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Johanna (Hansi) French, who peacefully departed this world on Thursday, February 26, 2026, in Chillicothe, Ohio. She was 87 years old.

Born Johanna Roetger on February 15, 1939, in the vibrant city of Frankfurt, Germany, she later made her home in Chillicothe, Ohio, where she became a cherished member of the community. Johanna's journey from Germany to Ohio stands as a testament to her adventurous spirit and steadfast resilience.

For 23 wonderful years, Johanna served as a dedicated bus driver for the Chillicothe City Schools, touching the lives of countless children and their families with her kind demeanor and unwavering commitment. Beyond her professional life, she was an active member of the Calvary Lutheran Church, where she found both spiritual solace and a family of friends.

Johanna's heart was one of her greatest attributes, as shown through her love for her family, cherished moments with her grandchildren, and the special bonds she formed with dear friends. Her warmth extended not only to her grandchildren Tyler French (Matthew Cumbie), Lauren French (Robert Romanstine), and Johanna Crawford but to her special friend, Joyce Norris. Her joy in playing Bunco reflected her light-hearted nature and zest for life's simple pleasures.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 66 years, Donald H. French, who was her partner in many joyous travels out West and a steadfast companion through life's many journeys. Her legacy lives on through her son, Gregory French, and his wife, Julie, of Greenville, SC; her son-in-law, Chris Crawford; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Johanna was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Nicole French Crawford, her parents, Franz and Johanna (Beck) Roetger, and her sister, Maria Yoe.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during a visitation at Haller Funeral Home & Crematory in Chillicothe, on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. A funeral service celebrating Johanna's life will follow at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Tom Pairan officiating followed by burial at Grandview Cemetery.

Johanna French will be sorely missed but leaves behind a legacy of love, joy, and unwavering dedication to family and community.
