Joe L. McMahon, 82, died September 16, 2017, at Adena Regional Medical Center, following a brief illness. He was born April 5, 1935, in Clinton County, OH, to the late Levi Delbert and Mazie Minerva (Walker) McMahon. On January 30, 1965, he married Ella Louise Brown, who survives. Also surviving are his daughter and son-in-law Robyn (Freygang) and John Clohessy, of West End, NC; granddaughters Abigail Lenzi, Sara Lenzi, both of Carthage, NC, and Rachel "Davys" (Andrew) Lenzi-Weisbecker, of Durham, NC; 7 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; and a brother Paul T. (Lorraine) McMahon, Ossining, NY. He was predeceased by his brother Henry J. McMahon. Joe was an educator and an active naturalist. He earned his Bachelor's Degree from Miami University in 1957. He then studied Oceanography at the University of Miami, followed by earning his Master's Degree in 1967 from Miami University. He also completed post graduate courses at Ohio University-Chillicothe, Ohio State University and Ohio Dominican University. He taught at Marshall High School, Belfast High School and finally Southeastern High School from 1965 until 1989, where he taught physics, chemistry and biology. His love for nature led him to serve as a volunteer at Mound City for 20 years; become a founding member of the Scioto Valley Bird and Nature Club; and was a rabbit breeder belonging to the American Rabbit Breeders Assoc. Joe was also an avid WWII historian. A memorial service in his honor will be held at 5:30pm Monday, September 25, at the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park.
